“Empire Riverside” Hotel in Hamburg, Germany

Floor-to-ceiling glazing of 6,400 square metres ipasol solar protection glazing

The bronze tower completely changes the Hamburg skyline – it rises 65 metres above the new “Hafenkrone” district between Reeperbahn, the harbour, and Speicherstadt. The guests of the new luxury hotel “Empire Riverside” can enjoy a fantastic panoramic view over the city at Elbe river because all of the rooms have floor-to-ceiling glazing over the entire width of the room. The famous architect David Chipperfield created a 21-storey architectural masterpiece that fits right into the Hanseatic city. The facade is equipped with 6,400 square metres of ipasol solar protection glazing, which not only provides an optimum indoor climate, but also a true-colour view.

In the past, this location was utilised by the former Bavaria brewery. Now, the luxury hotel is part of a new district, called “Hafenkrone”: three interwoven structures on an area of 3,870 square metres.

The L-shaped foundation supports the impressive hotel tower and smoothly transforms into an independent office wing. While the tower offers space for 328 elegantly furnished rooms, the hotel foundation houses the lobby and conference areas. The entire beam-and-column design has been covered with the finest weatherproof bronze and 6,400 square metres of solar protection glazing (ipasol neutral 50/25).

Guests are warmly welcomed in the 4-storey, 18-metre high foyer, which is reminiscent of a 1930s luxury liner: wall cladding made of the finest wood, red-brownish marbled terrazzo floors, leather wing chairs, and antiquities. Moreover, the ballroom, conference, and dining areas, as well as lounge bar, fireside lounge, and a modern spa are all located on the ground floor.

328 rooms with floor-to-ceiling glazing

Above all this are the hotel rooms in the impressive tower with an exclusive bar on the 21st floor. Each and every one of the 328 rooms impresses with floor-to-ceiling glazing over the entire width of the room. Thanks to the colourfast glazing, the guests can follow up on what is going on in the harbour at any time of day. Solar protection glazing (ipasol neutral 50/25) prevents the rooms from heating up too much in the summer and thereby also saves on air conditioning. The g-value of 27 per cent as per EN 410 is extremely low. This is achieved by a solar protection coating on the inside of the outer pane. However, a relatively large amount of daylight still enters the rooms (tL = 50 %). In the wintertime, the extremely low Ug-value (1.1 W/m²K as per EN 673) provides for effective heat insulation. It is in this way that the energetic properties of the glazing lower the operating costs and preserve natural resources.

Solar protection glazing (ipasol neutral 50/25) effectively prevents the rooms from overheating through the facade. At the same time, it protects from cooling down too much during the winter.
